| Abstract: | This teacher's guide to microgravity contains 16 student science activities with full background information to facilitate an understanding of the concepts of microgravity for teachers and students. Topics covered in the background sections include the definitions of gravity and microgravity, creating microgravity, the fluid state, combustion science, materials science, biotechnology, and microgravity and space flight. There is a curriculum content matrix to accompany the science activities that identifies which activities have applications in physics, mathematics, and chemistry. These activities include satellite motion, free fall motion and weightless effects, accelerometers, gravity and acceleration, inertial balance, gravity driven fluid flow, surface tension, fiber pulling, crystal growth, rapid crystallization, and microscopic observation of crystal growth. This guide also provides a list of relevant National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) educational materials such as videotapes, slides, software, and print publications. Recommended readings from books and periodicals as well as contact information for various branches of NASA are also included. (DDR) |
