Abstract: The purpose of this project was to develop valid evaluation procedures for the selection of Container Equipment Operators (CEOs) in the shipping industry. A job analysis was conducted to identify the essential tasks of the CEO job. Site visits, a task inventory, and the determination of essential tasks were used in the job analysis. The skills and abilities needed in the job were identified through ratings by six experienced CEO trainers and four job analysts. Abilities needed for the job were divided into categories of vision abilities, hearing abilities, dexterity abilities, and physical abilities. Three computerized tests (the Maze Test, Maze and Ball Test, and the Cargo Test) were developed to assess multi-limb coordination, reaction time, control precision, and time sharing. A practice task was developed for users who were not familiar with the operation of a computer and the use of joysticks. Prior to using the 3 tests a pretest was administered to 60 college students, and the battery was revised based on their responses. The tests were validated with a sample of 49 participants who, in general, were not experienced with a computer keyboard or mouse. Correlations were also investigated between the developed computerized tests and some paper-and-pencil tests believed to test some of the same abilities. Criteria were then selected for test performance necessary for successful job performance. Analyses also determined that the test was fair across ethnic and age groups and to individuals with and without video game experience. (Contains 1 figure, 4 tables, and 15 references.) (SLD)
