Abstract: Explaining that the capacity of a school is the number of pupil places it can accommodate, this guide for Local Education Authorities (LEAs) describes the British government's method of assessing the "net capacity" of schools, which will be used as the measure of the capacity of all maintained, mainstream schools in England from June 2002. The guide's introduction addresses the purpose of net capacity, the schools to which net capacity applies, how net capacity is assessed, and LEA responsibilities. Contents are: Part 1, "Background," discussing why net capacity has been introduced and the increased area standards; Part 2, "How the Net Capacity Method Works"; Part 3, "What Needs To Be Measured"; Part 4, "Measured but Excluded Areas"; and Part 5, "Using the Net Capacity Assessment Forms." (An appendix contains definitions of types of spaces.) (EV)
