Abstract: The aim of these documents is to assist Local Authorities in Britain with asset management planning (AMPs) for schools. AMPs set out the information needed, and the criteria used, to make decisions about spending on school premises which will: raise standards of educational attainment; provide sustainable and energy-efficient buildings that are consistent with Local Agenda 21 strategies (from 1992's Earth Summit); provide innovative design solutions that reflect the future needs of technology-based education; increase community use of school facilities; maximize value for money; ensure efficient and effective management of new and existing capital assets; help governors and head teachers in developing plans for individual schools by making fair and transparent the process of decision-making on funding priorities across the Authority; help the development of partnership projects; and provide assurance to stakeholders that capital projects are soundly based and represent good value for the money. The guidance on formulating AMPs is presented in six sections: (1) the plan framework; (2) property information systems and school premises data; (3) condition assessment; (4) suitability assessment; (5) sufficiency assessment; and (6) appraisal guidance.
