Abstract: This bulletin provides guidance on school building design in Britain for the 21st century, including issues such as increased use of information and communication technology, opening up the school to the wider community, more flexible learning patterns, inclusion of special educational needs pupils in mainstream schools, sustainability, and design quality. Part 1, "Key Issues for the 21st Century School," looks in detail at the changes in education and government priorities. Part 2, "Design Issues for Schools," examines the design implications of these developments, while part 3, "The Building Process," considers how to achieve design quality and value for the money in the building process. Descriptive examples and photographs are scattered throughout the text. (Appendices include checklists on community use, inclusion, and security, and discussion of information and communication technology considerations.
