| Abstract: | This brief provides statistical information on U.S. traffic accidents delineated by state. A map details the 2001 traffic fatalities by state and the percent change from 2000. Data tables include: (1) traffic fatalities and fatality rates, 2001; (2) traffic fatalities and percent change, 1975-2001; (3) alcohol involvement in fatal traffic crashes, 1991 and 2001; (4) speeding-related traffic fatalities by road type and speed limit, 2001; (5) passenger car occupants and motorcyclists killed, 2001; (6) traffic fatalities and vehicles involved in fatal crashes, 2001; (7) fatalities in the bed of pickup trucks by age, 2001; (8) key provisions of safety belt use laws, and belt use rates as of December 2001; (9) child passenger protection laws as of December 2001; (10) impaired driving high-priority legislation as of December 2001; and (11) status of state motorcycle helmet use requirements as of December 2001. The data indicate a 5 percent decrease in the number of traffic fatalities between 1975 and 2001. (KB) |
