| Abstract: | The purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature on family support services for families with young children with disabilities. Within the last two decades, the focus of early intervention has begun shifting from child-centered to family-centered practice with an emphasis on providing comprehensive family support in the delivery of quality early intervention services. Essential to this provision is understanding the variations across and within families, which may differ on various aspects including culture, language, socioeconomic status, religion, structure, size, and geographical location (Turnbull & Turnbull, 1997). This paper examines the challenge for service providers to identify family support services that are tailored to the needs, preferences, and priorities of each family and the extent to which current practices, particularly the DEC recommended practices, for family support services reflect an awareness and understanding of culturally and linguistically diverse families. The paper is divided into five main sections: (1) criteria used to search and select the literature reviewed in this paper; (2) definitions and types of family support; (3) a review of the literature as it relates to the five recommend practices on family support presented in the Odom and McLean (1996) text; (4) limitations of the studies reviewed; and (5) guiding principles service providers should consider as they recommend and implement family support services. The report includes extensive references, an annotated bibliography, and a list of available resources from the CLAS Web site. (Author/SG) |
