Abstract: There has been a steady increase in the United States in recent decades of grandparents raising their grandchildren. The aim of this study was to determine if depression levels of grandparents raising their grandchildren and depression levels of traditional grandparents differ. Additionally, the extent of the relationship to depression scores by grandparent's income and grandparent's age were examined. Participants residing in the United States included 212 grandparents who belong to Internet listservs. Using Survey Monkey, respondents answered a brief demographic survey and then took an Internet-adapted Beck Depression Inventory-II. A t test was used to determine if depression levels were different in the two groups, and only a small effect size was revealed. A multiple regression was performed to determine the extent of the relationship to depression scores by age and income. Neither age nor income proved to be significant predictors of depression.
