| Abstract: | Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the demographic trends from 2002 to 2010 of students who completed marketable skills programs at Texas community colleges. In addition, the extent to which statistically significant changes occurred in the ethnic and gender diversity of MSAA completers from 2002 to 2010 was reviewed. In Texas, the MSAA may be considered a bridge certificate from entry level career training to longer credit hour certificates and associate degree programs. Through these MSAA certificates, students can have their first experience of higher education, complete a short-term college workforce certificate, and gain occupational skills sought by local employers, and qualify for higher paying jobs. Methodology: To examine MSAA completer data in the state of Texas, a quantitative descriptive research design approach was determined to be appropriate. In this study, descriptive statistics were used to describe the demographic trends between 2002 and 2010 for MSAA completers at Texas community colleges. Findings: Analysis of the data indicated an increase in the total number of Black, Hispanic, White, and Asian MSAA completers from 2002 to 2010. Moreover, changes were noted in the ethnic diversity of MSAA completers, with Hispanic students comprising a higher percentage of the 2010 MSAA completers than they did in 2002. Statistical analyses, however, did not reveal an increase in the average number of MSAA completers at each community college by ethnic membership between 2002 and 2010. Concerning gender, males increased their MSAA completion rate in the past 3 years of data analyzed herein. This increase revealed the only statistically significant result in the study, that the average number of male MS AA completers per Texas community college was higher in 2010 than in 2002. Regarding the number of community colleges in Texas with MSAA completers, the number of colleges has increased steadily from 2002 to 2010, with six colleges in 2002 and 27 colleges in 2010. Of the 27 colleges reporting MSAA completers in 2010, six colleges had over 71% of MSAA completers. Most of the colleges with MSAA completers were located in large urban areas of the state, whereas colleges located in smaller rural areas had the lowest amount of MSAA completers. Implications of the results are discussed.
