Abstract: Research indicates that there are very few curriculum resources that empower parents and educators to teach social justice, resilience, and empathy. Using prior knowledge, experience, research, and theoretical frameworks, this research study aims to create an interactive workshop that encourages parents to use read-aloud and conversation to inspire empathy, resilience, and social justice activism. A group of expert peer evaluators (n = 16) in the field of education and academia evaluated the effectiveness of the workshop design. The workshop was titled "Read and Rise: An Interactive Workshop for Homeschooling Parents Focused on Building Empathy, Resilience, and Activism in Children through Read Aloud, Conversation, and Service." The workshop included strategies modeling how to read and rise while on a homeschool journey. It also consisted of breakout sessions where participants read literature highlighting various social injustices and presented ways in which families can rise to action and contribute to a more socially just world. The content and presentation were evaluated to determine the usefulness and appropriateness of the workshop design. The evaluator responses were unanimously positive, and it was concluded that such a workshop would be invaluable for not only homeschooling parents, but for all parents, teachers, and educational leaders who are committed to modeling and engaging in social justice activism with young children in hopes of creating a safer and happier world for everyone. The curriculum design provides a comprehensive and easy to implement framework that unites individuals, broadens perspectives, increases awareness, and results in action, by young and old, to affect positive change. The findings indicate the importance and effectiveness of a Read and Rise Interactive Workshop for parents and educators that can be delivered in a short amount of time with long lasting results. Using read-aloud and conversation in the home or class setting to build resilience and increase empathy in children is indeed a powerful method that encourages children to rise to action and commit to serving humanity while finding extreme joy, purpose, and fulfillment.
