Abstract: Academic mid-level managers, despite their work history and education, are not always prepared for the duties and responsibilities of their current positions or for senior-level management positions. The purpose of this study was to examine how academic mid-level managers perceived intentionally-designed professional development at a suburban Texas community college empowered them in their current role and in the future. This qualitative case study explored participants' perceptions and lived experiences of professional development training for academic mid-level managers with a focus on interviewing both new and seasoned department chairs, coordinators, directors, and deans. A purposeful sample of nine participants was drawn from structured interviews conducted by the researcher. The results of this study revealed that academic mid-level managers believed they gained an awareness of their roles, duties, and methods of leadership and perceived the professional development as being relevant professionally and personally. They also believe that there are specific factors that support and hinder their institution in offering professional development opportunities that are tailored to academic mid-level managers.
