Abstract: This report focuses on the college choice process of 1,251 Illinois high school seniors (Class of 2022) who were intending to attend a four-year college in Fall 2022. The survey was conducted in the summer of 2022. In this report, the authors use survey responses to answer the following questions: (1) What general factors do diverse groups of Illinois high school seniors consider in choosing a four-year college?; (2) What is the single decisive factor that most animates the four-year college choice for different groups of Illinois high school seniors?; (3) How do high school seniors view four-year colleges inside and outside Illinois, and why do seniors choose to stay or leave the state for colleges?; and (4) What are students' intentions and interactions with four-year colleges that may influence these decisions? The authors found that the answers to these questions differed by student groups, but they also found important similarities across factors considered by high school graduates regardless of student characteristics.
