Abstract: Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) coordinated the development and administration of the Washington Student Experience Survey (WSES) in 2022 as a response to research showing that unmet basic needs represent an increasing barrier to the success of higher education students. This survey collected census-level data on basic needs security from students at 39 colleges and universities across the state, and the findings have supported institutional, regional, and state efforts to address basic needs challenges faced by students. The Postsecondary Basic Needs Act (2SHB-1559 2023) cited the survey findings and included a requirement to administer a similar survey again in 2024. To satisfy the requirement of the Postsecondary Basic Needs Act, and to gain new insights into needs and trends among higher education students, WSAC coordinated the updating and readministration of the WSES again in 2024. Updates to the survey included: (1) A new set of questions to better understand childcare needs; and (2) A new method of administration to reduce institutional burden, reduce respondent burden, and improve the quality of respondent demographic data. The updated survey was administered in Fall 2024 to almost 250,000 currently enrolled students at 46 colleges and universities across the state. This report presents the findings from the 2024 administration and includes comparisons to the findings from the 2022 administration, providing insights into current needs and trends in basic needs security among higher education students in Washington.
