Abstract: This classroom-based action research explored the influence of creative engagement strategies-- a combination of Participation Squares and Spin-the-Wheel--on enhancing student engagement in a middle school classroom. The study was motivated by a recurring issue of poor student engagement. The intervention, used as a class starter to boost student mood and participation, involved students responding to a question or prompt through quick doodle or quick write response on sticky notes, followed by a reward system using a spinning wheel. Quantitative data showed high ratings in non-verbal participation, student confidence, creative expression, and overall classroom interaction, with teacher observations noting improvement after the intervention. These were supported by a thematic analysis of student perceptions, which highlighted the activities as easy and engaging, stress-free and comfortable, and lively and energizing class starters. Results suggest that creative, fun, and low-pressure participation strategies can significantly enhance classroom engagement.
