| Abstract: | Prekindergarten (Pre-K) programs are designed to prepare young children for kindergarten and increase their likelihood of academic success. This research brief examined the fall 2024 kindergarten readiness rates of students who were enrolled in Pre-K programs (public and private) in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) during the 2023-2024 school year. While Pre-K program-specific kindergarten readiness rates are discussed, Voluntary Prekindergarten Education Programs (VPKs) within M-DCPS are the primary focus. Comparative analyses were performed by Pre-K program type and attendance status on two kindergarten readiness benchmarks (690+ and 707+). The analyses revealed that of the 7,644 students who completed the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) Star Early Literacy, 52% of all test takers were kindergarten-ready at or above 690, compared to a 44% readiness rate at the 707 benchmark. This suggests that the kindergarten readiness rates for M-DCPS VPK students are positively influencing the overall readiness rates. |
