Abstract: This methodology appendix explains the data used and the analysis undertaken to produce the findings in the full report, "Teacher Labour Market in England: Annual Report 2025." The first section lists all of the secondary data sources that were used in the analysis, followed by an explanation of how data were used from the School Workforce Census (SWC), initial teacher training (ITT) census, and Department for Education's (DfE's) Apply data to report on the ITT recruitment and teacher retention figures. This section also includes detail on how ITT application statistics were used to forecast this year's ITT recruitment, along with outlining how data were summarised from the Teacher Regulation Agency (TRA) and the Home Office to analyse trends in qualified teacher status (QTS) recognition and visa applications from foreign teachers. Another section discusses how data were used from the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) and from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) to show how teacher pay has become less competitive over time. This report concludes by showing how the Labour Force Survey (LFS) was used to measure teachers' working hours and perceptions of their workload along with the prevalence of flexible working in the graduate labour force. This section explains key variable definitions, provides sample sizes, and outlines the methodology for identifying teachers and similar graduates in the LFS data.
