Abstract: This report was conducted in compliance with Senate Bill 55 (SB 55), 88th Texas Legislature, Regular Session (codified as Texas Education Code Section 61.06694): "an act relating to a study and report by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board regarding best practices for assisting students with autism spectrum disorder" (ASD). The report was prepared with the assistance of the Advisory Council on Postsecondary Education for Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD Advisory Council). The study should determine best practices for assisting students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are enrolled at institutions of higher education. The legislation states that the study must identify and track: (1) The number of students with ASD who graduate from secondary schools in this state; (2) The number of students with ASD who are enrolled at institutions of higher education; (3) Financial assistance available to students with ASD who enroll at institutions of higher education; and (4) Graduation rates of students with ASD who enroll at institutions of higher education. Additionally, the study must identify and examine best practices and program modules from public and private institutions of higher education outside of Texas that have achieved successful results in working with students with autism spectrum disorder. As directed by this bill, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) worked with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to conduct a study identifying specialized K-12 programs for students with ASD and explore how those programs could be replicated or expanded in postsecondary institutions. This report includes recommendations from the IDD Advisory Council on how to improve tracking and reporting.
