Abstract: Universities are crucial to sparking growth and opportunity, by bringing together student populations, research partners, local businesses, and employers to create vibrant communities, jobs, and opportunity across the UK. This briefing takes a look at how universities are generating growth and opportunity across the West Midlands of England, providing statistics and case studies in the following areas: (1) training public sector workers; (2) small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and business growth; (3) research and development; and (4) building pride in place and local communities. Universities in the West Midlands are located across key cities including Birmingham, Coventry, and Wolverhampton. Analysis by London Economics estimated that universities in the West Midlands had a total economic impact of £18.82 billion in 2021-22. This figure includes the economic activity generated by employing people, purchasing of goods and services, the local spending power of staff and students, as well as the impact of research and knowledge exchange activities. In 2021-22, universities in the West Midlands spent over £2.1 billion on staff. Staff spend a proportion of their income with local businesses and on local services which supports a thriving economy.
