Abstract: The state of the world for young people today is marked by unique opportunities and significant challenges. Young people are coming of age in a society impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid technological advancements, increasingly polarized governments and society, and ongoing movements for social change. Researchers continue to study the impacts of these profound challenges on young people, though there are relatively few opportunities for young people to share insights about these challenges from their own perspective. This report is part of the annual State of Young People research initiative, which is intended to provide young people with regular opportunities to share more about their lives and experiences. America's Promise Alliance partnered with Mathematica and NORC at the University of Chicago to design and implement a nationally representative online survey. The study team collected data about social divisiveness, civic education, artificial intelligence, mental health, and thriving through a national online survey of 1,555 teens and young adults in June and July 2024. This report covers these topics in depth and then provides a big-picture look at young people's overall thriving. To measure this, young people were asked to specifically rate their level of thriving across six domains. The report discusses opportunities to pursue more holistic strategies that address each of these topics in partnership with young people and ways to bring together the ecosystem of institutions and systems that serve young people to tackle these issues and consider avenues to promote thriving.
