| Abstract: | English 10: Advanced Placement (AP) Seminar is an alternative to the English 10 course without prerequisites. In 2023-2024, six high schools in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) piloted this course, primarily enrolling students who had taken Honors English 9, with Gaithersburg High School expanding access to students receiving English Language Development (ELD) services. This outcome evaluation compared the academic performance of Grade 10 students enrolled in AP Seminar and English 10 in six participating high schools during the 2023-2024 school year. It supports the MCPS' emphasis on academic excellence and will be used to inform efforts to provide programmatic and discrete opportunities for all students, as outlined in the MCPS' 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. This study used a quasi-experimental design to compare 2023-2024 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program English Language Arts/Literacy (MCAP ELA/L) and AP Seminar exam outcomes for Grade 10 students in the English 10: AP Seminar course with matched students enrolled in the English 10 course based on PSAT Reading and Writing scores, demographics, and services received. In its first year of implementation across six MCPS high schools, compared to the English 10 course, enrollment in the English 10: AP Seminar course was higher among female students and those identified as Asian, but lower among male students, those identified as Hispanic/Latino, Two or More Races, EML, recently exiting EML, students receiving FARMS services, or those with an IEP. Students with stronger prior academic performance demonstrated higher proficiency rates on the Grade 10 MCAP ELA/L assessment compared to their English 10 peers. Additionally, students who earned higher scores on the AP Seminar exam were more likely to be proficient on the MCAP ELA/L assessment, underscoring the course's potential academic benefits. However, small sample sizes for some student groups limit the generalizability of these findings. |
