| Abstract: | The theme for the 46th yearbook of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers was "Breaking Down Barriers to Mobilize Our Literate Selves". This year's publication highlights the practices teachers and researchers take to break the barriers that stymy literacy education, while simultaneously ensuring these practices enable equitable representation of all students. The articles within this yearbook showcase the diverse and dynamic ways literacy is being enacted, from adjusting practices in the K-16 classroom to ensure equity to offering insights into program and policy adaptations. ALER President, Dr. Barbara McClanahan's presidential address exemplifies the dynamic and powerful ways literacy can reach all learners by providing multiple pathways to comprehension. The 2024 Sturtevant Award Winners, Dr. Alicia Kershaw and Dr. Beth Gregory, detail the disconnect between policy and practice and how they were able to reshape their literacy education curriculum for teacher candidates in order to meet the state mandates and changes to certification testing requirements. The graduate award winners provide insight into how the literate practices for readers at the elementary to university level help to shape their comprehension and understanding of the written word. The final two sections of the 46th yearbook examine various approaches to Addressing Legislative Barriers and how Mobilizing Literate Practices ensures Equitable and Representative Literate Practices. This edition serves as an opportunity for scholars, students, and teachers to consider the current barriers they face and reflect on the current practices used to address change and mobilize literacy within the community. |
