| Abstract: | Individuals who are released from prison find themselves navigating a complex reentry process in which they must manage multiple, interconnected and sometimes competing priorities. Understanding that supporting returning students' educational attainment is a key consideration during reentry, the New England Prison Education Collaborative (NEPEC) team at the New England Board of Higher Education undertook a landscape analysis of common struggles and strategies amongst program providers across New England. Through conversations held in four focus groups and nine semi-structured interviews, four primary themes emerged: (1) the scope of postsecondary programs during reentry; (2) the hidden curriculum of college, campus culture, and program design impact reentering students' educational continuity; (3) building digital skills through access and programming; and (4) addressing financial barriers through financial aid and direct assistance. |
