Abstract: This paper attempts to compare the salaries of teachers in districts in Southern Illinois. In order to make a fair comparison, a "full career" analysis is used that assumes that a teacher stays in a single district for the entirety of her teaching career. This is distinct from the more common way of comparing teacher salaries which generally relies on comparing median teacher salary per district, county, state, or region. That method, while useful, is limited due to its failure to consider factors such as how districts or regions remunerate teachers based on their experience and level of education. This paper uses a more comprehensive (though also limited) method for comparing teacher salaries, with five data points in the salary schedules of the included districts being ranked collectively to arrive at a cumulative ranking. The result is a ranking of "best paying" public school districts in the Southern Illinois region along with a discussion of the limitations in comparing teachers' pay in different ways.
