| Abstract: | In 2025, Digital Promise conducted collaborative small focus groups, engaging approximately 70 high school students and recent high school graduates, from six districts in different regions across the country as well as from Digital Promise's League of Innovative Students. The sessions used semi-structured prompts to elicit students' learning experiences, relationships with peers and teachers, sense of belonging, connection to their lives outside of school, and hopes for the future. The sessions embedded both discussion and brainstorming techniques to generate ideas for how high school might change to meet students' needs, and students contributed both orally and with short written phrases. The report begins with a synthesis of the key themes students expressed, then move into more specific findings. The authors infuse students' suggestions and detail their recommendations for what can be changed to make high school a dynamic, future-oriented, supportive environment within a system that can meet all students' individual learning goals and needs. The brief ends with a discussion of policy and broader implications driven by the type of high school experiences students want. |
