| Abstract: | Introductory statistics is a gateway course for numerous college majors, and it frequently poses a significant barrier to degree completion, disproportionately affecting students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in higher education. To address these challenges, the Gates Foundation funded Lumen Learning to develop the Lumen One Introduction to Statistics, a courseware product designed to address the needs of all students by replacing traditional textbooks with interactive, culturally responsive content and embedded support for evidence-based teaching (EBT) practices. Concurrently, the foundation asked Digital Promise to conduct independent research examining how instructors implement the courseware and how different instructional practices relate to student outcomes. This report examines how EBT strategies shape outcomes in courseware-using classes. To reduce reliance on instructor self-report, EBT enactment was measured through student survey items describing 23 observable instructional practices aligned with eight EBT strategies. |
