Abstract: Research article publication is often considered a critical indicator of academic institutions' success and productivity. It improves the institution's reputation, attracts talented students and faculty members, and increases the institution's chances of receiving funding opportunities from different funding agencies. This paper provides a reliable and sustainable methodology for improving the quality and quantity of research article publications for engineering institutions in India. The various tools, techniques, and initiatives that promote research culture and improve its outcome in terms of research papers are also discussed. A case study of Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE), Pune, India, depicts how predictive, prescriptive, descriptive, and diagnostic data analytics approaches help to identify the barriers in the research article publications in academic institutions and provides the ways to overcome them. It also helps to set the publication targets and develop the path to perceive the targets. The outcomes and effectiveness of the case study are discussed using the papers published in Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. The challenges, opportunities, and recommendations are also provided for the smooth and effective implementation of the developed methodologies.

It is often seen as a key indicator of the success and productivity of academic institutions (Langfeldt et al., [<reflink idref="bib17" id="ref2">17</reflink>]). It helps to improve the institution's academic reputation (Sayed, [<reflink idref="bib34" id="ref3">34</reflink>]), which can attract more talented students and faculty members. It can increase the institution's chances of receiving funding opportunities for research and development (Moore et al., [<reflink idref="bib20" id="ref4">20</reflink>]). Engaging in research article publications can help faculty and students develop their research skills and enhance their understanding of the field. Research article publications can lead to research funding opportunities, collaborations, and networking with industry and research organizations (Slaughter, [<reflink idref="bib36" id="ref5">36</reflink>]). Research article publications can help the institution stay competitive by fostering innovation and staying up-to-date with the latest developments in the field (Huenneke et al., [<reflink idref="bib12" id="ref6">12</reflink>]). Research article publications can contribute to the scientific community by disseminating new findings, ideas, and perspectives.</p> <p>Research plays an essential role in teaching and learning by providing up-to-date information, promoting critical thinking, and enhancing the quality of education (Ranjan, [<reflink idref="bib32" id="ref7">32</reflink>]). The latest research findings and developments in various fields can help to keep students and teachers informed about the latest trends and advances in their subject areas (Naser, [<reflink idref="bib25" id="ref8">25</reflink>]). It can help to promote open-mindedness, curiosity, and a willingness to explore new ideas and perspectives. Research articles are often used to supplement course materials and textbooks, providing additional information, examples, and case studies that can help enhance education quality. It also helps acquire research skills such as searching for and evaluating sources, analyzing and interpreting data, and effectively writing and communicating research findings.</p> <p>Research can change the paradigm from conventional teaching–learning to problem-based learning (PBL), emphasizing solving real-world problems by applying theoretical knowledge (Pagander & Read, [<reflink idref="bib29" id="ref9">29</reflink>]). As a result, many educational institutions are adopting PBL as a teaching method, and research is being conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of PBL and to develop best practices for its implementation. This research is leading to a paradigm shift in teaching and learning, where the focus is shifting from traditional teacher-centered instruction to student-centered learning that emphasizes problem-solving and practical skills development.</p> <p>Research article publications have a long history in academic institutions, dating back to the seventeenth century when the first academic journal, the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was established in England in 1665 (Meyns, [<reflink idref="bib19" id="ref10">19</reflink>]; Moxham & Fyfe, [<reflink idref="bib22" id="ref11">22</reflink>]). In the nineteenth century, academic institutions and universities in Europe and North America began establishing their own journals to publish research articles by their faculty and students. These journals were primarily focused on the natural sciences, but over time, they expanded to cover a wide range of disciplines. The twentieth century saw a significant expansion of academic publishing, with the establishment of many new journals, the growth of university presses, and the rise of commercial publishers. Electronic publishing and digital technology revolutionized academic publishing. Online publishing and open-access models made research articles more widely available to readers, and the emergence of search engines and databases made it easier to discover and access research articles (Piwowar et al., [<reflink idref="bib30" id="ref12">30</reflink>]). Today, research article publications continue to be a crucial part of academic institutions and universities, providing a means for scholars to disseminate their research findings, establish their reputations, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their fields (Mårtensson et al., [<reflink idref="bib18" id="ref13">18</reflink>]; Morton, [<reflink idref="bib21" id="ref14">21</reflink>]).</p> <p>According to the Scopus database (Sayed, [<reflink idref="bib34" id="ref15">34</reflink>]), the top ten countries in terms of research article publications in 2020 are shown in Fig. 1. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the top ten countries in terms of patent applications filed and copyright registrations in 2020 are shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively. It is important to note that these rankings can vary depending on the specific database and metrics used for analysis. Make in India and its initiatives by contributing to developing cutting-edge technologies, enhancing the competitiveness of Indian industries, and promoting Indian products and brands in international markets. Research article publications can support this initiative by providing a platform for researchers to share their findings on the latest technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes, which can help to drive innovation and improve the quality and competitiveness of Indian-made products. It can also help to attract investment and collaboration opportunities by demonstrating the expertise and capabilities of Indian researchers and industries in various fields.</p> <p>Furthermore, India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the importance of research and innovation in the education system (Lakshmi & Ugandhar, [<reflink idref="bib16" id="ref20">16</reflink>]; Vignarooban et al., [<reflink idref="bib37" id="ref21">37</reflink>]). This can also help to attract international students and faculty to Indian academic institutions and promote international collaborations (Aithal & Aithal, 2019). The research article publications can play a crucial role in achieving the goals of the NEP by promoting research culture, enhancing the quality of education, fostering innovation, providing evidence-based policymaking, and internationalizing education (Sarta, [<reflink idref="bib33" id="ref22">33</reflink>])(Kannan, [<reflink idref="bib14" id="ref23">14</reflink>]).</p> <p>The research index is typically measured using metrics such as the number of publications, citations, h-index (Alonso et al., [<reflink idref="bib1" id="ref24">1</reflink>]), patents, and funding (Donovan, [<reflink idref="bib6" id="ref25">6</reflink>]). According to the Scopus database, India ranked fourth in the world in terms of research output in 2020, with over 135,000 publications (Naika & Pathak, [<reflink idref="bib24" id="ref26">24</reflink>]; Scimago Journal & Country Rank, [<reflink idref="bib35" id="ref27">35</reflink>]). However, India's research output is still significantly lower than that of the United States and China. In terms of research funding, India's expenditure on research and development (R&D) was about 0.7% of GDP in 2020, which is significantly lower than that of developed countries such as the United States (2.8%), Japan (3.2%), and South Korea (4.5%) (Kumar & Ayyappan, [<reflink idref="bib15" id="ref28">15</reflink>]). The government of India has also launched several initiatives to promote research and innovation, such as the Atal Innovation Mission, Startup India, and the National Innovation Foundation (Department of Science and Technology, [<reflink idref="bib5" id="ref29">5</reflink>]). These initiatives encourage research and innovation and support startups and entrepreneurs in India (NITI Aayog, [<reflink idref="bib28" id="ref30">28</reflink>]).</p> <p>Academic institutions should also take several initiatives to accelerate the research and the quality of the research article publications. This paper presents a methodology for improving the quality and quantity of research articles and publications in engineering institutions in India. The proposed methodology is a continuous improvement tool, and the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is also presented with a case study of Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE), Pune. The primary objectives of this study are:</p> <p></p> <ulist> <item> To develop a methodology for improving the research and research article publications in engineering institutions.</item> <p></p> <item> To apply descriptive, diagnostic, prescriptive, and predictive analytics approaches to analyze the PCCOE's publications data (of 2014 and 2020) indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar.</item> <p></p> <item> To develop and implement strategies for promoting research and research publications.</item> <p></p> <item> To assess the effectiveness of the publication improvement strategies on the quality and quantity of publications published in the years 2021 to 2023.</item> </ulist> <p>The remaining paper is organized into five sections. The developed methodology is presented in Sect. 2. The results of the PCCOE's research publication data between 2014 and 2020 are presented in Sect. 3. The various strategies developed and implemented between 2021 and 2022 are discussed in Sect. 4. Section 5 presents the effectiveness of the implemented strategies on the quality and quantity of the publications published between 2021 and 2023. Finally, Sect. 6 presents key findings, conclusions, and contributions.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-3">Methodology</hd> <p>This section presents a novel methodology for improving the quality and quantity of the research article publications. The step-by-step procedure of the proposed methodology is summarized in Fig. 4 and explained in subsequent subsections. It can be used for enhancing research publications in research and academic institutions as it is or with required modifications.</p> <p>Graph: Fig. 4 A proposed novel methodology for improving the quality of research publications in engineering institutions</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-4">Selection Data Sources</hd> <p>The proposed methodology starts with the selection of suitable sources for research publication data collection. The selection of data sources for a given country should be based on the parameters considered by the nationally and internationally accepted accreditation and ranking agencies. For example, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) world ranking and Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) are reliable international agencies and are accepted in many countries. National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) is the government-ranking agency, and National Board of Accreditation (NBA) (National Board of Accreditation, [<reflink idref="bib27" id="ref31">27</reflink>]) and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) (National Assessment & Accreditation Council, [<reflink idref="bib26" id="ref32">26</reflink>]) are the two recognized accreditation bodies in India that assess the performance of engineering institutions in India and consider research publications as one of the vital assessment criteria (Mukherjee, [<reflink idref="bib23" id="ref33">23</reflink>]; <emph>QS World University & Business School Rankings</emph>, 2023). The papers published in journals, conferences, book chapters, and books indexed in Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and Google Scholar are considered (Donovan, [<reflink idref="bib6" id="ref34">6</reflink>]; Hicks et al., [<reflink idref="bib10" id="ref35">10</reflink>]). The case study presented in this paper considers the PCCOE's publications indexed in WoS, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Furthermore, the parameters such as the number of citations to the paper and the Impact Factor (IF), CiteScore, h-index, i-10 index, and quartile of the journals are considered to assess the quality of the publications (Alonso et al., [<reflink idref="bib1" id="ref36">1</reflink>]; Hirsch, [<reflink idref="bib11" id="ref37">11</reflink>]).</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-5">Data Collection</hd> <p>The required data (mentioned in Sect. <bold>2.1</bold>) can be collected by individual faculty member profiles or institute profiles. The web-scrapping can also be used. The Journal Citation Report (JCR) of the WoS also provides information on the journal's IF, quartiles, etc. Scopus and Google Scholar also provide similar information. In this regard, four data analysis techniques, predictive, prescriptive, descriptive, and diagnostic, can be used, as shown in Fig. 5.</p> <p>Graph: Fig. 5 Data analytics approaches</p> <p>Predictive analytics involves the use of mathematical tools such as machine learning, data mining, and statistical models (Bian & Fu, [<reflink idref="bib3" id="ref38">3</reflink>]; S. Gupta & Bhattacharya, [<reflink idref="bib8" id="ref39">8</reflink>]). The best-fit regression models for the total number of publications per year can be developed using historical data (Bokonda et al., [<reflink idref="bib4" id="ref40">4</reflink>]). These regression models provide information on whether the quality and number of publications are improving (N. Gupta et al., [<reflink idref="bib9" id="ref41">9</reflink>]). The number of publications can also be predicted for the next 3–5 years to assess whether it meets expectations. The predicted number of publications can also be taken as input for identifying, planning, and executing the methods to improve publications.</p> <p>The predictive analysis tells what the problem is, and the prescriptive analysis helps take corrective actions to solve the problem. For example, if the citations per paper decrease over time, it could indicate that the quality of publications decreases. In this case, it is necessary to motivate faculty members to publish articles in quartile 1 and 2 journals having high IF/ CiteScore. The possible causes of this may be the poor research facilities available in the institute, faculty members not working on emerging research areas, or faculty members publishing their research work in inappropriate journals/ conferences/ books.</p> <p>Descriptive analytics describes the problem by diagnosing the symptoms. The results of descriptive analytics are usually shown in the form of charts and graphs to discover trends and patterns. While descriptive analytics can tell what happened (root cause) based on historical data, diagnostic analytics tells why it happened. For example, if descriptive reveals that there are more conference publications than journals, then an investigation in this direction can be carried out to identify the root causes. The probable root cause in private engineering colleges could be that the faculty members primarily focus on teaching. The corrective action in this regard could be improving the faculty-student ratio, which can help faculty members get additional time for research writing.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-7">Formation of Faculty Groups</hd> <p>The improvement in the number of quality publications is primarily dependent on the faculty members, and therefore, it is necessary to carry out a detailed analysis of faculty members and their publications. It provides information on the current research skill level and what kind of corrective actions need to be taken to motivate faculty members to focus on the research, improve quality publications, increase awareness of national and international level collaboration for research activities, etc. Grouping the faculty members based on platforms where publications have been made is essential. Table 2 provides proposed guidelines for faculty group formation based on the quality of publications and platforms where the papers are published. Furthermore, the questionaries can be prepared based on understanding the problems faced by the faculty members, and accordingly, the need-based training program can be conducted. The inputs received from the faculty members should be discussed with the R&D team, and the requirements of the faculty members should be prioritized using Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) tools. The prioritization helps in planning and executing the publication improvement strategies effectively, and the output can also be observed in a short duration.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-9">Continuous Assessment and Improvements</hd> <p>The outcomes of implementing publication improvement techniques should then be assessed based on comparative data analytics. It provides the effectiveness of the implemented publication improvement techniques and if there is any need for modifications and changes to be made. The assessment is a continuous process and should be done regularly. The new targets can be set after achieving satisfactory results. The new targets for publications can be in the following terms:</p> <p></p> <ulist> <item> Revising the publication targets for SCI/ SCIE-indexed journals.</item> <p></p> <item> Revising the publication targets for quartile one and two journals.</item> <p></p> <item> Allocating more funds for faculty members who are working in the advanced domains.</item> <p></p> <item> Revising the incentive policies to motivate faculty members to publish their papers.</item> <p></p> <item> Revising the target number of publications per faculty member.</item> </ulist> <hd id="AN0179068007-10">Data Analysis</hd> <p>This section analyzes the PCCOE's number of articles published between 2014 and 2020 and indexed in WoS, Scopus, and Google Scholar.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-11">Descriptive and Diagnostic Analysis</hd> <p>The results of descriptive analysis (refer to Fig. 6) show that 453 research papers have been published. The pie chart in Fig. 6 (a) shows that 85% of the Scopus-indexed research publications are conference papers, whereas only 12% are published in journals. The data shows that only 3% of book/ book chapters are published, and as an academic institute, there is a scope for publication improvement. The possible reasons behind this may be the lack of awareness about "where to publish?", the focus of the institute may be more on teaching–learning rather than research, lack of research writing skills, availability of insufficient resources for research, seriousness about research publications, etc.</p> <p>Graph: Fig. 6 Descriptive statistics for the publications (for the years 2014 to 2020)</p> <p>Figure 6<bold> (b)</bold> shows that the number of publications is improving over time. However, the impact of the COVID outbreak on research article publications can be seen in the years 2019 and 2020. However, the number of journal papers published in 2019 and 2020 is more, and this may be because the faculty members utilized this time to improve their writing skills and understanding of journal indexing. Figure 6<bold> (c)</bold> reveals that only 12% of articles are indexed in WoS and 41% of articles in Scopus. The impact of research, as shown in Fig. 6<bold> (d),</bold> reveals that the WoS-indexed articles received only 546 citations, 16.85% of the citations in Google Scholar. Therefore, root cause analysis is required, special efforts are required, and a proper methodology should be adopted and implemented to improve the publications indexed in WoS and Scopus.</p> <p>The analysis is also carried out to understand the selection of publishers, journals, and conferences to submit the manuscripts. It is observed from Table 3 that most of the conference papers (nearly 60%) are presented in ICCUBEA, which PCCOE organizes, and IEEE Explore publishes. It is observed from Table 4 that several journals have now been removed from Scopus, and most of the journals are not indexed in WoS. The scope of these journals is also very wide and does not focus on a very particular research domain. The faculty members need to be trained to make them capable of selecting a domain-specific journal. Table 5 shows that the faculty members are aware of the reputed and well-known publishers; however, there are fewer publications. The model selection is based on the Correlation Coefficient (CC) value and the impact of underfitting and overfitting on the predictions. The anomalies present in the data are also identified and eliminated to improve the accuracy of the prediction and make it more realistic.</p> <p>Graph: Fig. 7 Best-fit regression models</p> <p>Figure 7(a) shows that the linear model is taken as the most suitable model as its predictions made for 2021 to 2025 seem more realistic. The predictions are also supported by the present and planned strength of the faculty members, the availability of the present and predicted research facilities, and the progress rate of research. The exponential, 2nd-degree polynomial and 3rd-degree polynomial models look better than the linear model; however, their predictions are unrealistic due to overfitting. The prediction model states that the PCCOE can publish 1039 research papers between 2021 and 2025, and the research policies and activities should be developed and executed accordingly. The publications in 2019 and 2020 are considered anomalies and not considered for model development, as the faculty members published fewer publications in the conferences in 2019 and 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.</p> <p>The exponential is the best-fit regression model for the number of journal papers, as shown in Fig. 7(b). The PCCOE can publish 154 papers in the journals between 2021 and 2025. Considering the transformation in engineering education, special attention should be given to publishing more papers in high-quality journals. Figure 7(c) shows that the linear regression model is taken as the most suitable model for the number of conference papers publications. The predictions show that the PCCOE can publish 975 research papers between 2021 and 2025. However, more focus should be given to converting the conference papers into journal papers by improving the quality of the work and communications.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-13">Development of Publication Improvement Strategies</hd> <p>This section presents various initiatives developed and implemented in 2021 and 2022 at the department and institute levels.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-14">Special Interests Groups (SIGs)</hd> <p>The first initiative is taken to motivate like-minded and domain-specific faculty members to form a SIG for collaborative research. More than 25 SIGs are formed under the industry or research organization mentorship. Several dedicated Short-Term Training Programs (STTP), such as "Research Methodology and Optimization," "Manuscript Preparation for Journal," and "Research Psychology," were organized to improve research and written communication skills. The targeted population was the faculties working in PCCOE. In this study, an online-based survey approach was used. It consisted of an attached email with a cover page with the research objectives. The questionnaire survey started with (<reflink idref="bib1" id="ref42">1</reflink>) general information covering the demographic information of survey respondents such as name, designation, and experience (<reflink idref="bib2" id="ref43">2</reflink>) respondents were asked questions related to the peer review process, how to select a suitable journal or conference, the process of submitting journal or conference articles, how to conduct a literature review, how to write a literature review paper, what are types of articles, process for plagiarism and copyright permissions. The questionnaire output helped to: (a) frame different policies that included lecture series to motivate and provide fundamental knowledge for research writing and publications. (b) Conduction of faculty development program to motivate the faculty members. (c) developing motivation strategies to frame policies for forming a special interest group and formulating a faculty group (see Table 2). It revealed that there is a need to go to the next level and conduct "need-based training" programs to motivate the faculty members, solve their issues, and guide them to find solutions to their problems. In this regard, a lecture series on "Research Article Publications: An Insight" was first conducted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and based on their effective outcomes, it was conducted at the institute level. The contents and the questions addressed in the lecture series are summarized in Table 6. The Faculty members are motivated and trained to create and update WoS, Scopus, and Google Scholar accounts. Furthermore, it is recommended to link WoS and Scopus accounts with Open Researcher and Contributor IDentifier (ORCID) accounts for regular and fast updating of their publications. A list of materials, such as BE projects, funded projects, consultancy work, etc., that can be published as a paper is prepared and communicated to the faculty members.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-16">Comparison of Earlier and Improved Publications</hd> <p>This section presents the outcomes of the various initiatives taken to improve research article publications, and their effectiveness is also assessed for the articles published between 2021 and 2023.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-17">Descriptive and Diagnostic Analysis</hd> <p>Tables 8 and 9 compare earlier (published between 2014 and 2020) and improved (published between 2021 and 2023) numbers of publications. The number of journal paper publications indexed in WoS and Scopus significantly enhanced by 443.8% and 321.1%, respectively. Table 9 shows that the total number of publications has increased from 453 to 776. A significant rise in journal papers (473.7%) and a notable reduction in conference papers (-9.6%) is observed. Furthermore, the percentage of journal papers contributed to the total number of publications also improved from 12% to 43.02%. This clearly indicates that there has been a considerable improvement in the quality and quantity of publications in less than three years. It also indicates that the publication initiatives taken by the institute are helping and motivating the faculty members to improve the quality and quantity of their research work. Table 10 shows that the faculty members are presenting their research work at conferences organized at various institutes across India and some parts of the globe. Tables 11 and 12 depict that the faculty members have started selecting the journals and publishers carefully based on the quality of the manuscript, domain of the journal, and indexing trend of the journal. More priority is given to SCI-indexed and quartiles 1 and 2 journals for submitting the manuscript. Table 12 infers that 140 (63.63%) journal publications are associated with reputed publishing houses. It shows that the faculty members are aware of the reputed and well-known publishers. Prescriptive Analysis</hd> <p>Table 13 shows the effect of publication improvement initiatives on the predicted number of publications. A significant rise is observed in the number of journal publications and the predicted number of journal paper publication targets achieved before 2023. The conference paper publication trend shows that the faculty members are converting the conference papers into journal papers by improving its quality. Specifically, there were 158 conference papers in the year 2021, and this number has risen significantly to 195 in the year 2023. This suggests a notable upward trend in the production of conference papers over the specified period. In 2021, the prediction was 18 journal papers, but the actual achievement exceeded expectations, reaching 40. Furthermore, in 2023, the anticipated number of journal papers was predicted to be 29, but the actual achievement surpassed this prediction, reaching a substantial count of 78. The total number of publications till 2023 is 759, is nearly 73.05% of the predicted number of publications for 2021 and 2025. A novel methodology for improving the quality and quantity of research article publications in engineering institutions is developed, and its effectiveness is revealed, as observed from the case study of Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE), Pune, India. The developed methodology is a continuous improvement process and can be used to model and analyze different organizations' publication data using prescriptive, predictive, descriptive, and diagnostic analytics approaches.</p> <p>The publication data for 2014 and 2020 shows that the PCCOE published 453 research papers, which are indexed in Scopus, but only 57 journal papers were published. The quality and quantity of the publication reveal that the number of publications and citations are not encouraging. The selection of journals and conferences is also poor. More focus should be given to converting conference papers into journal papers by improving the quality of the research work and written communications. The regression models predict that the PCCOE can publish 1039 papers, including 154 journal papers, between 2021 and 2025. The publication improvement strategies are developed and implemented to achieve the targets.</p> <p>The improved publication data for 2021 to 2023 shows that the number of journal paper publications indexed in Web of Science and Scopus have improved significantly by 443.8% and 321.1%, respectively. The total number of publications increased from 453 to 759 in less than 3 years. The total number of publications till 2023 is 760 (73.14% of the predicted publications), and the trend shows that the PCCOE can publish more than 1000 research articles between 2021 and 2025. The analysis also reveals that the faculty members have started selecting journals and conferences carefully based on the quality of the manuscript, domain, scope, and indexing trends. The priority is given to the journal indexed in SCI, quartiles 1 and 2. It also indicates a significant improvement in the communication/ writing skills of the faculty members.</p> <p>It is therefore concluded that the developed methodology for improving research article publications is useful and effective and is helping and motivating the faculty members of PCCOE to improve the quality and quantity of their research work.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-20">Recommendations</hd> <p>Increasing research activity can be pursued through various approaches.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-21">Funding and Resources</hd> <p>Governments, institutions, and organizations should prioritize allocating sufficient funds to research initiatives. Grants, scholarships, and fellowships can also incentivize researchers and students to engage in research.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-22">Collaboration and external funding</hd> <p>Encouraging collaboration and networking among researchers can foster a vibrant research environment. Establishing interdisciplinary research teams, organizing conferences, seminars, and workshops, and creating platforms for researchers to connect and share ideas can enhance research activity. Collaboration will increase levels of external funding.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-23">Research Culture and Environment</hd> <p>Cultivating a supportive research culture is vital. Institutions should create an environment that values and rewards research contributions.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-24">Scope of Future Work</hd> <p>There is a need to strengthen the skill sets of the existing faculty members and motivate them to be active researchers. For this purpose, the universities/ colleges can conduct a research conference. This platform will support the researcher to present the ongoing work, and an exchange of thoughts will be carried out. Another approach is mentoring programs within and across institutions. The standard mentoring approach will pair up with new faculty members with experienced faculty researchers in a mentoring committee advising on career and research. The committee can plan their meetings to discuss progress and set goals. The most important is investing in research infrastructure. The investment approach has changed, and we must identify potential collaborators. This can be done through departmental meetings, research symposiums, or by reaching out to program coordinators. Investing in institutional leadership is important for long-term success, and having proper vision and direction is important for all institutes. Special efforts should be taken to improve the number of paper publications in the journals indexed by Web of Science and Scopus.</p> <hd id="AN0179068007-25">Limitation</hd> <p>The scope of this study is restricted to engineering institutions in India, mainly Pune city, Maharashtra state. The data was collected from academician of PCCOE, Pune, and therefore, it reflects their experiences and opinions. The study was conducted within a specific time duration.   Data: Research article publication is often considered a critical indicator of academic institutions' success and productivity. It improves the institution's reputation, attracts talented students and faculty members, and increases the institution's chances of receiving funding opportunities from different funding agencies. This paper provides a reliable and sustainable methodology for improving the quality and quantity of research article publications for engineering institutions in India. The various tools, techniques, and initiatives that promote research culture and improve its outcome in terms of research papers are also discussed. A case study of Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE), Pune, India, depicts how predictive, prescriptive, descriptive, and diagnostic data analytics approaches help to identify the barriers in the research article publications in academic institutions and provides the ways to overcome them. It also helps to set the publication targets and develop the path to perceive the targets. The outcomes and effectiveness of the case study are discussed using the papers published in Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. The challenges, opportunities, and recommendations are also provided for the smooth and effective implementation of the developed methodologies.
