Abstract: Listening to podcasts with a sole purpose to enhance communication abilities of L2 students is a great challenge. This study explored the challenges and attitudes of second language (L2) students when listening to authentic sources, specifically video podcasts on YouTube. Data of this qualitative research was collected through in-depth interviews with BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing/Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages) students who had reached the proficiency level. They were asked to listen to video podcasts aligned with themes related to proficient listening skills. The selection of video podcasts was based on topics outlined by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia for the proficient level. Preliminary research findings indicate challenges in vocabulary, speed, and dialect, with each challenge falling into specific categories. Meanwhile, attitude assessment, guided by appraisal theory, revealed both negative and positive attitudes among students, observed during the process and perception of the material. This research concludes that even though BIPA students have reached an advanced level, it does not guarantee that they will not face challenges in listening comprehension. Furthermore, attitude analysis provided valuable insights into the psychology of students during podcast learning, which can benefit various stakeholders.
