| Abstract: | Music engagement of young adults who are no longer in school is rarely studied in music education in Germany. Our research thus aimed to identify musical practices of young adults and factors influencing these practices. We asked 769 young adults from universities and vocational schools to complete a questionnaire on their musical practices from early childhood until today. Using exploratory MIRT, we discovered that all activities carried out by the young adults can be summarised by a general factor and grouped into the three dimensions non-formal musical activities, media-related musical activities and informal music learning. Subsequent regression and path analyses indicated that different people are more likely to be involved in different activities according to their demographics, musical sophistication, and personality. Thus, our study shows that young adults' need for musical participation appears to be so strong that they pave their way to music even under challenging conditions (such as COVID-19). |
