| Abstract: | This article examines how White evangelicals constructed "culture" as a theological and sociological category during 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork in both formal and informal pedagogical contexts, including a private, K-12 Christian academy and church-based programs. For them, concerns about "the culture" overwhelmingly focus on bodily issues, including non-heteronormative sexuality, transgender identities, and abortion, while issues like racism, immigration, consumerism, and income inequality receive minimal instructional attention. These selective concerns are constructed from interpretations of "imago Dei"--the belief in God's "design" for humanity--and form the basis of a distinct evangelical social identity used to advance social and political ends. Delivered through educational pedagogy, these beliefs shape responses to perceived cultural threats, thereby cultivating and reinforcing White evangelical group identity. |
