Abstract: Purpose: This study aimed to empirically examine the factors influencing career choices among students in Somali private universities, guided by expectancy theory. Specifically, it examined the impact of external influences, self-efficacy, perceived social status, career opportunities and students' interest in career choices. Design/methodology/approach: This study employed a cross-sectional quantitative research design to examine the proposed hypotheses. A sample of 263 students from various private universities in Mogadishu, Somalia, was recruited using an online convenience sampling method. Findings: The results revealed that students' external influences, self-efficacy, perceived social status and career opportunities directly affected their career choices. However, students' interest had a positive influence, albeit statistically insignificant, on their career choice. Originality/value: This study uniquely applied expectancy theory to investigate career choice factors among Somali students, providing valuable insights through structural equation modeling analysis. It highlights the key influences on career determination and offers practical guidance for universities and career counselors.
