| Abstract: | Despite the growing popularity of Story Circles, there is a lack of research in social studies and teacher education regarding how they impact teacher candidates' perceptions of intercultural competencies. This paper employs a convergent mixed-methods design to investigate social studies teacher candidates' perceptions of their intercultural competencies after participating with international students in three Story Circles workshops. The study explores their perceptions through thematic analysis of participant reflections and crosschecks the findings with recordings of the workshops and Likert-scale surveys. The coalesced themes highlight how participation actualized intercultural competencies. In the surveys, participants consistently rated their development of intercultural competencies positively. The relationships between survey results and themes were convergence or complementarity. The findings highlight the potential for Story Circles as a tool to foster intercultural competence among teacher candidates. |
