Abstract: A play-based approach to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) that centers joy and imagination is fundamental to teaching young students about environmental civic engagement. In turn, diverse young learners of underrepresented backgrounds also need bilingual and bicultural mentors and role models to demonstrate that the possibilities they dream of are achievable and feasible. This article outlines and describes a three-step learning framework created by two former kindergarten teachers, which the authors call "Joyful STEAM Civics: Interdisciplinary Learning Collaborations between TK-2 Students and Scientists" (TK, or Transitional Kindergarten, is a transitional grade between preschool and kindergarten). The framework emphasizes STEAM and social studies integrations and draws upon the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) curricular themes of "CULTURE" and "GLOBAL CONNECTIONS."
