Abstract: The development of linguistic ability in immigrant students is a key element in reducing the high rates of school failure and dropout that disproportionately affect this group. This study adopts a quantitative two-wave design to examine the development of various oral and written linguistic skills in a sample of 72 immigrant students in compulsory secondary education in Catalonia. Over two years, corresponding to the second cycle of compulsory secondary education, this development was assessed in the two official languages of Catalonia: Catalan and Spanish. The results showed a significant overall improvement in the learning of both languages. However, differences were observed when breaking down the linguistic components: morphosyntax improved notably in both languages, while reading did not show the same progression. These findings highlight the need to review how linguistic competences are addressed in the curricula implemented by the Catalan education system to ensure academic success among immigrant students.
