| Abstract: | Literature shows that teaching experiences can improve pre-service teachers' awareness of the context of where they teach. However, how teaching experiences lead to this awareness is poorly understood. This study aims to better understand teaching experiences in remote rural schools of Indonesia and the influence of these experiences towards pre-service teachers' awareness of educational situations there through the lens of transformative learning. Transformative learning is an experience-based learning that can be beneficial for pre-service teachers' professional development. This learning can facilitate them in increasing awareness by providing new or affirming existing understandings. A total of forty-one pre-service primary teachers were questioned through semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that all participants engaged in transformative learning and perceived an increased awareness of educational situations in remote rural schools. We identified three themes indicating participants' teaching experiences in remote rural schools, three sub-themes demonstrating participants' transformative learning processes, and two other sub-themes showing pre-service teachers' raising awareness of educational situations in remote rural schools. These themes and sub-themes will be elaborated further in the findings. The findings can contribute indirectly to the improvement of educational situations in remote rural schools. |
