Abstract: This study investigates the factors influencing university students' motivation to study and their satisfaction with the academic environment. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory, the study explores the interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, as well as the impact of satisfaction on students' motivation. An exploratory quantitative survey was conducted among 591 students from a Hungarian university, assessing their motivation using the Academic Motivation Scale and the Student Satisfaction subscale from the University Student's Motivation & Satisfaction Questionnaire-2. Results indicate a moderate level of self-determination among participants, with both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations playing significant roles. Satisfaction with the academic environment emerged as a key predictor of motivation, highlighting the importance of creating supportive and engaging learning environments. Factors such as satisfaction about the university environment, age, financial background and gender significantly influenced motivation levels. The study underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance the student experience in higher education, with implications for retention and academic success highlighting the need for comprehensive and multifaceted support approaches.
