| Abstract: | Attention skills are essential for children's learning, positive classroom behavior, and emotional well-being. Early elementary school is an important time for children to master not only basic academic skills, but also to learn how to pay attention. Attention skills in early school years have significant implications for children's future academic success. This narrative review discusses how attention works, why it is important, and what can compromise it in the classroom. It outlines various types of distractions including auditory, visual, task- and instruction related, and those associated with children's internal states. The paper offers strategies to promote attention skills and design attention facilitating classroom environment. These include reducing distractions, providing an optimum level of arousal, and implementing attention-restoration strategies. The paper further discusses how to promote voluntary attention through attention coaching and training children' planful attention and meta-attention skills. |
