Abstract: This study presents a bibliometric analysis of the research outputs from Ethiopian Universities of Applied Sciences (UASs) using SciVal, Ministry of Education (MoE) and the universities as a data source. The objective was to assess how these institutions align with the national mandate to support industrial development through applied research, technology transfer, and skill-oriented education. The analysis employ a biblometric review to examine patterns of publication volume, citation rates, disciplinary focus, faculty involvement, collaboration metrics, and their connection to sustainable development goals. Despite the national higher education differentiation framework, which empowers applied universities to foster practice-oriented, industry-linked innovation, the findings indicate that their research output resembles that of research-intensive and comprehensive universities, predominantly concentrating on theoretical knowledge rather than practical industrial engagement. The publication trends indicate little alignment between institutional mandates and actual academic practices. The Universities are highly affected by systemic issues including institutional isomorphism, weak university-industry linkages, and insufficient incentives for applied research. These gaps must be bridged by fostering mission-oriented research cultures, and enhancing the role of applied universities in Ethiopia's industrial development. Ultimately, this study contributes to ongoing national initiatives to create a more diversified, responsive, and mission-oriented applied science universities in Ethiopia.
