Abstract: Emotion regulation and cognitive flexibility are essential executive functions that contribute to psychological resilience during young adulthood. The present study investigated the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and cognitive flexibility among 186 Turkish university students (M[subscript age] = 22.51, SD = 2.10; 80.6% female). Participants completed the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI), and the Trail Making Test (TMT) to provide a comprehensive assessment of both self-reported and performance-based aspects of cognitive flexibility. Findings revealed that both cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression were positively associated with cognitive flexibility. However, in regression analyses, only expressive suppression remained a significant predictor. Additionally, male participants demonstrated higher cognitive flexibility scores, whereas parental education level and academic department did not yield significant differences. These results suggest that within a collectivist cultural context, both adaptive and restrictive emotion regulation strategies may support cognitive flexibility in young adults.
