Abstract: In the fourteen years since the 1990 MENC preconference symposium Multicultural Approaches to Music Education in Washington, DC, music educators have come to recognize the need to include a variety of world musics in all music curricula, from elementary classrooms to advanced performing ensembles. Accordingly, there has been a significant increase in the availability of teaching materials, both in new classroom basal series and in teaching anthologies specifically targeting world music cultures. This article provides a set of reviews introducing several resources that offer diverse approaches to teaching world musics. Each resource described represents new directions in world music books as multimedia supporting materials, flexible approaches to teaching, and broad applicability of materials for use by learners at every stage of instruction.

  Value: <anid>AN0013641918;9f601apr.04;2004Jul06.11:36;v2.1</anid> <title id="AN0013641918-1">Multicultural Resources: New Directions </title> <p>In the fourteen years since the 1990 MENC preconference symposium Multicultural Approaches to Music Education in Washington, D.C., music educators have come to recognize the need to include a variety of world musics in all music curricula, from elementary classrooms to advanced performing ensembles. Accordingly, there has been a significant increase in the availability of teaching materials, both in new classroom basal series and in teaching anthologies specifically targeting world music cultures.</p> <p>Given this new wealth of multicultural resource material, music educators can now select books, recordings, and other resources that will enable them to involve students in many new forms of music without placing an undue strain on increasingly limited classroom music budgets. Some multicultural resource materials are general and provide overviews of two or more cultures (see "Multicultural Resources" in the Winter 1998 GMT for suggestions). Other resources focus on a specific culture or ethnic group.</p> <p>This set of reviews introduces several resources that offer diverse approaches to teaching world musics. Three books provide the general music teacher with clear, step-by-step instructions for playing percussion instruments found more and more commonly in basal series and individual books featuring world music lessons. In these, readers are guided through the instrument's basic history, playing techniques, maintenance, and ensembles based on traditional musical styles and appropriate for classroom use. Both exercises and ensembles make use of a type of notation created by the author that allows a more "authentic" performance style from the beginning of instruction by combining rhythm with specific playing techniques. Another book explores the world of Thai music and culture through music, stories, recipes for traditional Thai food, and basic Thai vocabulary. Finally, several volumes from the new Global Music Series (Oxford University Press) not only offer a flexible approach to configuring world music curriculum, but also demonstrate the power of combining the efforts of ethnomusicologists with music educators to create instructional materials flexible enough to be used from preschool through postgraduate levels.</p> <p>Each resource reviewed below represents such new directions in world music books as multimedia supporting materials, flexible approaches to teaching, and broad applicability of materials for use by learners at every stage of instruction.</p> <aug> <p>By J.
