| Abstract: | National attention has been focused on the fact that math and science scores for students in the United States are among the lowest in the world. In DeSchryver's (1998) article, "Fifteen Years and Still a Nation at Risk," it was noted that American twelfth graders ranked nineteenth out of 21 industrialized nations in mathematics achievement and sixteenth out of 21 countries in science. To address this situation, several large-scale technology collaboration projects are going on with a common attempt to increase K-12 students' math and science performance in U.S. This article describes the technology collaboration project, one example of such a project, that was carried out between a graduate program at a state university in northern California and a government research center in charge of math, science and astronomy in northern California. The project ended inconclusively but serves as a useful object of study regarding how such collaborations might be carried out differently in the future. (Contains 1 table.) |
