| Abstract: | Word processing is part of every writer's set of competencies today, and as readers, their expectations of type have risen well beyond the old Courier font of typewriters. Yet only recently have writers had access to the thousands of different typefaces available today and had such power in making design choices. Type has been much studied and researched as to legibility. Scholarly discussion of the impact of typography, particularly the subtle influence of what many call the "personality" of type, is still in its infancy. This article presents several research studies that attest to the inexact science of the personality of typefaces. The author also provides an outline of her aims in teaching about visual rhetoric and several examples of exercises on typography used in her class. |
