| Abstract (English): | This paper presents a bibliographic revision on the initial health care that the nursing professional must provide to patients that have been victim of a trauma, following the guidelines of the Trauma Committee of the American School of Surgeons in the course Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). Trauma is one of the most important causes of death at any ages and social groups. The social and economic costs of traumas are impossible to calculate. Any person is prone to suffer a traumatism and hence the importance of having a basic knowledge that allow the health professionals, especially those in the nursing practice, to properly approach the initial care. This paper also considers epidemiological aspects, biomechanics and initial nursing care in the emergency room with the aim of providing guidelines that contribute to standardizing the initial care of the patient with trauma. At the end of the document we make a proposal on the nursing support to be given to the patient's family when the patient is hospitalized. It is our hope that this paper becomes a useful tool for the nursing professionals that are faced with these situations on a daily basis and also to become a source of motivation to continue going further in this subject. | Abstract (Spanish): | En este artículo se presenta una revisión bibliográfica sobre la atención inicial que debe proporcionar el profesional de enfermería al paciente víctima de trauma siguiendo los lineamientos establecidos por el Comité de Trauma del Colegio Americano de Cirujanos en el curso Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). El trauma constituye una importante causa de muerte en todas las edades y grupos sociales, ya que provoca un incalculable costo social y económico. Cualquier persona es susceptible de sufrir un traumatismo y, por ello, es importante que todos los profesionales de la salud, especialmente el profesional de enfermería, disponga de unos conocimientos básicos que le permitan abordar adecuadamente la asistencia inicial. En este artículo se contemplan los aspectos epidemiológicos, la biomecánica y el cuidado inicial de enfermería en el servicio de urgencias con el fin de dar pautas que contribuyan a la estandarización del cuidado inicial del paciente con trauma. Al final del documento se realiza una propuesta sobre el apoyo que se le debe brindar a la familia del paciente en su ingreso al servicio de urgencias. Se espera que este artículo sea de utilidad a los profesionales de enfermería que enfrentan a diario este tipo de situaciones y sea fuente de motivación para continuar profundizando en esta temática. | Abstract (Portuguese): | Neste artigo se apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a atenção inicial que deve proporcionar o profissional de enfermagem ao paciente vítima de trauma, seguindo uma orientação estabelecida pelo Comitê de Trauma do Colégio Americano de cirurgiões no curso Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). O trauma constitui uma importante causa de morte em todas as idades e grupos sociais, já que provoca um custo social e econômico incalculável. Qualquer pessoa é suscetível de sofrer um traumatismo e por isso é importante que todos os profissionais da saúde, especialmente o profissional de enfermaria, disponha de conhecimentos básicos que lhe permitam abordar adequadamente a assistência inicial. Neste artigo se contemplam os aspectos epidemiológicos, a biomecânica e o cuidado inicial de enfermagem no serviço de urgências com o fim de dar orientações que contribuam à estandardização do cuidado inicial do paciente com trauma. No final do documento se faz uma proposta sobre o apoio que se lhe deve dar à família do paciente durante seu ingresso a urgências. Espera-se que este trabalho seja útil para os profissionais de enfermagem que defrontam diariamente este tipo de situações e que seja fonte de motivação para continuar aprofundando nesta temática.
