| Abstract (English): | This study describes the frequency of use of so-called alternative and complementary therapies in patients with blood diseases admitted to the Clinical Management Unit of Hematology, Universitary Hospital of Jaén, Spain, during the period from April to November 2009. There has been no selection of the sample, using the total number of patients (n = 84). 45 patients (53.6%) reported they had used alternative therapy while 39 (46.4%) had not used any. Patients used 9 kind of therapy, emphasizing that herbal medicine was used by 40 patients. Regarding reasons leading people to use the most reported were family tradition (38%) and effectiveness (36%). 71% of respondents recognized the self-treatment as a means of access to the alternative and complementary therapies and 82% had not reported their use to the health professionals caring for them. | Abstract (Spanish): | Este estudio describe la frecuencia de uso de las llamadas terapias alternativas y complementarias en pacientes con enfermedades oncohematológicas ingresados en la unidad de Gestión Clínica de Hematología del Hospital Universitario Médico-Quirúrgico del Complejo Hospitalario de Jaén, durante el periodo comprendido entre abril y noviembre de 2009. No se ha realizado ninguna selección de la muestra, utilizándose el total de pacientes (n=84). 45 pacientes (53,6%) reconocieron haber utilizado alguna terapia alternativa mientras que 39 (46,4%) no habían utilizado ninguna. Fueron 9 las terapias usadas por los pacientes, destacando la fitoterapia que fue usada por 40 pacientes. En cuanto a los motivos que inducen a su utilización destacan los que lo hacen por tradición familiar (38%), y los que lo hacen porque creen que son efectivas (36%). El 71% reconoció el autotratamiento como forma de acceso a las terapias alternativas y complementarias y el 82% no había comunicado su utilización a los profesionales sanitarios que les cuidan.
