Abstract (English): The problems associated with contamination of untreated sludge, due to the volumes of these wastes generated in wastewater treatment plants, are described. These affect the environment due to its content of organic matter, microorganisms and heavy metals. The aim of this work is to perform a review of existing regulations for the management of sludge or to make possible its application in soils and the treatment technological processes that are applied to reduce its environmental impact. The current standards for the proper management and reuse of sludge, establish strict control over heavy metals and microbiological contamination. The technological processes employed can be physical (such as centrifugation, filtration and drying), chemical (which include lime stabilization, conditioning and chemical disinfection) or biological (such as anaerobic and aerobic digestion). Among these, the most used are the biological ones followed by dehydration of sludge by drying. Similarly, it is recognized that there are other available technological such as ozonation, which allows to obtain reduction efficiency of the indicators of physical–chemical and microbiological pollution between 31and 99, 99 %, as well as 90 % of volume.
