Background: The aim of this study was to determine the demographic and pathological characteristics of male patients with breast cancer. Methods: We reviewed clinical records of male patients diagnosed with breast cancer from 2000 to 2009 at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN). Data from the main clinicopathological and demographic variables, date of diagnosis, last follow-up or death were included. Survival was determined by the Kaplan- Meier method and patients were stratified according to the evaluated variables. Results: Median age was 65.3 years (range 23-87 years). Three were clinical stage (CS) I (9.1%), 13 were CS II (39.3%), and 17 were CS III-IV (51.6%). Radical mastectomy was done in 23 patients (69.7%). Of the total, 32 were ductal carcinomas (97%), whereas, only 1 case was ductal carcinoma in situ; 17 were ER/PR positive (51.5%),3 were ER positive/PR negative (9.37%), 3 were ER/RP/ cerb-B2 negative (9.1%) and 1 case was ER/RP negative cerb-B2 positive (3%). Sixteen were lymph node positive (66.7%). Regarding treatment, 10 patients received adriamycin based adjuvant chemotherapy and 4 patients had neoadjuvant treatment with anthracyclines with sequential taxanes, 17 patients (51.5%) were treated with hormonotherapy and 12 with radiotherapy. The most common site of recurrence was bone and lungs. The overall survival at 5 years was estimated in 72.5%. Conclusion: Despite having a higher percentage of cases diagnosed in advanced stages (III and IV), overall survival at 5 years was 72.5%, that because most of the patients were positive for hormone receptors.
