Abstract (English): Introduction: While arterial hypertension (AHT) is a major cardiovascular risk factor, a large number of subjects know the diagnosis after the installation of various systemic complications. Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is a method that not only diagnoses tool but also serves as a follow-up of patients with resistant hypertension, so the aim of our study was to determine the epidemiological behavior of ABPM in individuals who were attend in the Dr. Manuel Noriega Trigo Hospital, Venezuela. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in 146 adult patients of both sexes were selected to perform ABPM in the "Dr. Manuel Noriega Trigo" Hospital during 2013. Indications for the implementation of ABPM were based according to the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology as well as the definition of AHT through the ABPM. The qualitative variables were expressed in absolute and relative frequency, using the chi-square test to determine association between them. Results: ABPM were evaluated in 146 patients with ABPM (being excluded for insufficient measurements 12 subjects). Of the 134 individuals studied, in 35.1% (n=47) the ABPM was aiming to determine the diagnosis of AHT while in 64.9% (n=87) ABPM was performed for monitoring control of blood pressure. In the first group, 38.7% (n=18) of the individuals had a diagnosis of AHT, while in patients with history of hypertension, 43.7% (n=38) was not controlled measurements during the 24 hours study. The ARB's family drugs were the most used in patients with established diagnosis. Conclusions: A lower frequency of hypertension is observed with respect to other studies conducted in Latin America. However, the frequency of patients with uncontrolled AHT is considerable the comprehensive evaluation of these individuals and the cutoff points used to define it to be necessary.
