Abstract (English): Introduction: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dental caries is the main oral problem in industrialized countries, affecting between 60 and 90% of the school population and a large majority of adults. Objective: To determine the prevalence of caries school children of public institutions in Cali during 2010. Methods: Descriptive study. We used the methodology suggested by WHO for these studies with multietapic sampling, which combines the cluster method and systematic sampling. The authors examined 697 children from 5 to 12 years of the 42 selected educational institutions. A database was made in Excel software and data were analyzed with Stata statistical software version 10.0 to obtain percentages and means of variables. Results: The prevalence of cavitational caries is 22%, DMF-T index was 1.65 at age 12. Conclusions: The value of 1.65 for DMF index for children at the age of 12 years is below the 2.3 value previously established by the National Public Health Plan for the period 2007-2010. Caries prevalence decreased from 67% to 22%. This information is representative for school children of public educational system in the municipality of Cali, but does not represent the entire population of children of ages for 5 to 12 years of Santiago de Cali. Abstract (Spanish): Introductions: Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud OMS la caries dental es el mayor problema bucal en los países industrializados, afectando entre el 60 y 90% de la población escolar y una gran mayoría de adultos. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de caries en los escolares de instituciones públicas de Cali durante el año 2010. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo. Se utilizó la metodología sugerida por la OMS para este tipo de trabajos con un muestreo en diversas etapas donde se combinan la técnica de conglomerados y el muestreo sistemático. Los autores examinaron 697 niños de 5 a 12 años de las 42 instituciones educativas seleccionadas. Se hizo una base de datos en el programa Excel y posteriormente se analizaron en el programa estadístico Stata versión 10.0 de donde se obtuvieron los porcentajes y los promedios. Resultados: La prevalencia de caries cavitacional es del 22%, índice COP-d a los 12 años fue 1.65. Conclusiones: El valor del índice COP de 1,65 para los niños de 12 años es inferior a 2.3 establecido por el plan Nacional de Salud Publica para el periodo 2007-2010. La prevalencia de caries disminuyó de 67% a 22%. Esta información es representativa de los niños de la Escuelas Públicas del municipio de Cali, pero no representa toda la población de 5-12 años de Santiago de Cali. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
