Abstract (English): The relationship between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system has been known for a long time. Every time more papers are published on the participation of the microbiota and its metabolites in the etiopathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, autism, schizophrenia and depression. Known as the microbiota-gut-brain axis, this relationship involves various afferent and efferent pathways, as well as the vagus nerve and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and interacts through the immune, neuroendocrine, and neuronal systems. Our microbiota influences our brain and intestine through the secretion of neuroactive substances, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, glutamate, and gammaaminobutyric acid, and can also alter brain function indirectly through changes in the inflammatory state and immune, producing proinflammatory cytokines. Dysbiosis or imbalance of the normal microbiota in the intestinal tract can lead to certain mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): La relación entre la microbiota intestinal y el sistema nervioso central es algo conocido desde hace tiempo. Cada vez se publican más trabajos sobre la participación de la microbiota y sus metabolitos en la etiopatogenia de enfermedades neurodegenerativas, síndrome del intestino irritable, autismo, esquizofrenia y depresión. Esta relación, conocida como eje microbiota-intestino-cerebro, implica a varias rutas aferentes y eferentes, así como al nervio vago y al eje hipotálamopituitaria-adrenal, e interactúa a través de los sistemas inmunitario, neuroendocrino y neuronal. La microbiota tiene influencia en nuestro cerebro e intestino a través de la secreción de sustancias neuroactivas (serotonina, noradrenalina, dopamina, glutamato y ácido gamma-aminobutírico), y también puede alterar el funcionamiento cerebral de forma indirecta a través de cambios en el estado inflamatorio e inmune, produciendo citoquinas proinflamatorias. La disbiosis o desequilibrio de la microbiota normal en el tracto intestinal puede llevar a ciertos trastornos mentales, como depresión y ansiedad. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
