Abstract (English): Introduction: It is common to find among students who have learning difficulties, that this is accompanied by a deficit at the level of the reading processes, which makes it necessary to evaluate this complex and very important skill. Objectives: The study aimed to determine the phonological awareness skills as predictors of reading problems in transition children and first year of basic education, evaluated with the format: "Evaluation of Phonological Awareness (ECOFON)". Method: The sample consisted of 136 students from a Public Educational Institution of Sincelejo (Colombia). The research is descriptive of each of the components of phonological awareness. Results: obtaining as a result transition students obtained lower scores in the initial phoneme detection and suppression components. While the first-year students obtained the highest scores in segmentation and count of syllables, in the other components the scores were low. Conclusion: The results show that the phonological difficulties for rhyme at an early age are related to the reading domain; as well as the ignorance of the grapheme-phoneme relationship.
