Abstract (English): Introduction. Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become an epidemic; in Mexico 12 million adults have it. The muscle weakness and loss of balance that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) present affect the gait cycle, which increases the risk of falls (RF). One of the strategies that has managed to reduce RF in people living with T2D are physiotherapeutic interventions. Objective. To determine the effect of a physiotherapeutic gait intervention and the RF in adults with T2D. Material and Methods. Prospective, longitudinal, quasi-experimental study. A physiotherapeutic gait intervention was applied to adults with T2D, including strengthening, stretching, balance and coordination exercises; the ranges of movement (ROM), muscle strength (MS) (Daniels-Worthingham scale), plantar footprint using the Hernández-Corvo index of the lower limbs and RF score (TINETTI) were calculated. Results. 21 adults, over 40 years of age, with a time of evolution of T2D of 13 ± 8 years participated; 85.76% were women, and 61.91% had obesity. A physiotherapy gait intervention was performed including strengthening, stretching, balance and coordination exercises. An increase in the ROM was registered and a significant difference was observed in the comparison of ranges of the MS variables in both lower limbs and the RF score decreased by 25% (p<0.005). The plantar footprint registered a change to the normal type foot of 34% in the right and 14% in the left. Conclusion: The increase of the ROM, MS, balance, coordination and the modification of the plantar footprint decreased the RF score in the participants of the present study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): Introducción. La diabetes mellitus (DM) se ha convertido en una epidemia; en México las cifras ascienden a 12 millones de adultos. La debilidad muscular y pérdida de equilibrio que presentan los pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DT2) afecta el ciclo de la marcha lo que aumenta el riesgo de caídas (RC). Una de las estrategias que ha logrado reducir el RC en las personas que viven con DT2 son las intervenciones fisioterapéuticas. Objetivo. Determinar el efecto de una intervención fisioterapéutica en la marcha, sobre el puntaje de RC (PRC) en adultos con DT2. Material y Métodos. Estudio prospectivo, longitudinal, cuasi experimental. Se realizó una intervención fisioterapéutica en la marcha a adultos con DT2, que incluyó ejercicios de fortalecimiento, estiramientos, de equilibrio y coordinación; se calcularon los rangos de movimiento articular (RDM) fuerza muscular (FM) (escala de Daniels- Worthingham), huella plantar mediante el índice de Hernández-Corvo de los miembros inferiores y PRC (TINETTI). Resultados. Participaron 21 adultos, mayores de 40 años, con un tiempo de evolución de DT2 de 13±8 años; el 85.76% fueron mujeres, y 61.91 % presentó obesidad. Se registró un aumento en los RDM y se observó una diferencia significativa en la comparación de rangos de las variables de FM en ambos miembros inferiores. La huella plantar registró un cambio a pie tipo normal de un 34 % en el derecho y en el izquierdo de 14%. El PRC disminuyó un 25 % (p<0.005). Conclusión. El aumento de los RDM, FM, equilibrio, coordinación y la modificación de la huella plantar disminuyó el PRC en los participantes del presente estudio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
